From creating a brand new look to only subtle enhancements for a natural but noticeable effect, dermal fillers are the world’s leading non-surgical treatment method to redefine your features and reverse the signs of ageing.

Made primarily from Hyaluronic acid, dermal fillers replicate this sugar molecule that occurs naturally in our skin, and increases Collagen production to the treated area to restore firmness. Dermal Fillers are also hydrophobic, meaning they attract moisture to the filled areas, restoring firmness and hydrating the skin from within.

Our highly trained nurses are experts at using these soft injectable gels to instantly restore lost volume, create definition and contour to all areas of the face, fill smokers lines & deep set wrinkles, acne pitting/scarring and can even correct facial asymmetries.

Please note that due to Australian regulations surrounding S4 prescription goods & their use in cosmetic injectables, we aren’t able to advertise the brand names of our products, or even a specific price. However, if you contact us we are happy to share this information with you.

It’s important to remember that while Dermal Filler is mainly used for aesthetic reasons, it is still a prescription medication that can only be administered by a registered medical professional. As such, there are some prerequisites to be aware of before your appointment.

Please ensure you:

  • Are not currently pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Are not planning to fly interstate within 72 hours, or fly Internationally within two weeks post treatment.
  • Do not consume alcohol or perform strenuous exercise in the 24-48 hours prior and post treatment
  • Have no excessive acne, sunburn, broken skin, wounds or coldsores in the desired treatment area.
  • If you are prone to coldsores, visit your local chemist for preventative medication. Not taking this medication can cause an outbreak, so take the night/morning prior to your appointment, as directed by your pharmacist.
  • Have not had any vaccinations, major dental work, or any aesthetic treatment planned to the same area for a MINIMUM of TWO WEEKS prior and post appointment.
  • Have not come down with an illness (Influenza, Bronchitis, Covid-19 etc) within the last two weeks as your body’s immune response is heightened.
  • Are not taking any antibiotic or steroidal medications (penicillin, amoxicillin, prednisone etc) for the two weeks leading up to your treatment.
  • Stop the use of anti-inflammatory medications a minimum of one week before your appointment. e.g. Ibuprofen, Aspirin, Naproxen/Naprogesic, Fish oils, St John’s Wort, Ginko, Ginseng, Vitamin E, or any blood thinning medications. You may take regular Panadol but advise your nurse if it was within the last 24 hours prior to treatment.
  • Ensure you are well hydrated by increasing your water intake, and have eaten a balanced meal in the last 4 hours prior to treatment.
  • If you suffer from an autoimmune or neuromuscular disorder (Eaton Lambert Syndrome, Myasthena Gravis etc) it is very unlikely you will be able to receive treatment. Please discuss and gain consent from your regular GP or specialist before booking in.

Available at Angel Aesthetics Clinic in Brisbane, Gold Coast and Perth.

Your final results should be visible by the four-week mark. Before this point, your dermal filler will still be settling and integrating into the tissue. You may notice swelling and asymmetry during this time frame, which is very normal and only a cause for concern if it doesn’t resolve within 4 weeks.

The duration of the effects of dermal fillers can vary depending on several factors, including the type of filler used, the area of the face or body that was treated, and the individual’s metabolism and lifestyle habits.

Generally speaking, the effects of dermal fillers can last anywhere from six months to two years or more. It is important to note that the effects of dermal fillers are not permanent as the body will eventually absorb the filler material over time. To maintain the desired results or build up safely, a follow-up treatment may be necessary.

Factors that can affect the longevity of dermal fillers include:

  • The type of filler used: Different types of fillers have different molecular structures and will be metabolized by the body at different rates.
  • The area treated: Areas of the face or body that experience more movement or muscle activity, such as around the mouth or eyes, may break down the filler material more quickly.
  • Metabolism: Individuals with faster metabolisms are likely to break down the filler material more quickly than those with slower metabolisms.
  • Lifestyle habits: Certain lifestyle habits, such as smoking or excessive sun exposure, may contribute to the breakdown of filler material and reduce the longevity of the treatment.
  • First time: whilst made up of a naturally occurring sugar molecule in our body, filler is viewed by our immune system as a foreign body. With subsequent treatments you’ll find your results last longer as your body will learn to ‘recognise’ it, and not send as many healing antibodies to break down your filler.
  • Facial Expressions: You may see a quicker decrease in effects near ‘high use’ areas like the mouth and surrounding areas, as excess movement breaks down filler quicker.

Most patients can expect to see pinpoint redness at the injection sites. Swelling is very likely, and usually the highest in the first 72 hours post your appointment. If this does occur you can take a non-drowsy antihistamine (Zyrtec, Telfast, Claritin etc) to help bring it down. The risk of bruising is minimal however this risk varies from patient to patient due to the placement of blood vessels under the skin. If you do bruise, the best way to heal is to up your water intake and get a minimum of 8 hours sleep per night. To boost your healing, LED Healite II treatments are our go to, or you can apply Arnica cream from 48 hours post treatment.

You can also take a non-drowsy antihistamine 30 minutes prior to your treatment, as this can minimise your body’s inflammatory response to treatment and minimise any potential swelling or bruising.

After your appointment:

  • To let the injections sites heal, please don’t touch the treatment area for a minimum of 12 hours.
  • You can resume your regular skin care routine from the next day but avoid heavy foundations or products for a minimum of 24 hours.
  • Do not drink alcohol, take any substances that increase the heart rate, or get a massage/sauna for a minimum of 48 hours post treatment.
  • Don’t apply any vitamin serums, AHA’s or retinol/retinoids to the area for a minimum of two days post treatment.
  • Most dermal filler treatments don’t require any massaging unless directed to by your nurse depending on placement and product choice

Lip Filler treatment does come with a higher risk of bruising & swelling due to the high amount of blood vessels located throughout the entirety of the lip.

Unless your nurse advises otherwise, massaging the lips is required once most of any swelling or bruising has subsided, and this should continue daily until the filler has integrated. See a demonstration on how to massage your lips here: https://youtu.be/eDFyj_PMmMM

As with all treatments administered via injection, a mild pressure sensation in the injection sites can be felt, and tenderness, inflammation, redness, itching, swelling and/or bruising are all very normal and not cause for concern. Less common mild side effects such as headaches, cold & flu like symptoms, pins and needles, numbness or nerve pain in or near the treated area can occur. During the 4 weeks it takes to integrate and settle into the tissue, you may experience all, some, or none of the above symptoms. We know any side effect can feel worrying, but remember any of the above are only a cause for concern if they do not resolve.

A rare but serious complication known as a Vascular Occlusion (filler enters an artery or vein, partially or completely blocking the blood flow) is something your nurse will discuss with you and what to look out for. Symptoms usually present immediately, but can occur within 72 hours as dark, mottled bruising and white patches or pale/blanched skin on or near the bruising. Heat and/or pain in the area can usually be felt, too. Tissue death can reportedly occur by an unresolved VO from the 48-72 hour mark, so please contact us immediately with photos and videos showing any bruise concerns.

Angel Aesthetics has recently adopted the use of Ultrasound in high risk areas, the latest revolution in safe aesthetic practice as this allows us to more accurately pinpoint where your veins and arteries are located under the skin and actively aid the prevention of occlusions and blindness.

A heightened immune response in patients can also cause adverse events such as a delayed/quick onset hypersensitivity (similar to an allergic reaction) and nodules (hard lumps that form), which is why we ask any patients who have been ill, taken antibiotics/steroids, received a vaccination or have active coldsores or broken skin in the two weeks before their appointment to advise their nurse.

An allergic reaction, whilst extremely rare, is still a possibility from all prescription medication so keep an eye out for itchy hives and/or swelling around the eyes, mouth and throat. Contact us immediately if you have any concerns, or call triple 000 if an emergency/outside of business hours.

The most rare and serious complication that can occur is blindness from an occlusion travelling to, and then blocking the opthalmic artery. In Australia, only two reported cases have occurred, but it’s important to be aware the risk exists.

Potential aesthetic side effects like Fordyce Spots can occur, which are tiny white dots on the lips that become more visible after lip filler treatment, this will resolve as the filler dissolves. Another potential is called the Tyndall Effect, which is a blue/grey discolouration and heightened risk in patients with thin tissue or highly depleted fat pads. Asymmetry after injection usually results from uneven/major swelling during application, and this is easily corrected at your follow up appointment if the asymmetry was not present prior to treatment, and if it has not resolved within 4 weeks.

Booking your DF follow up between 4-6 weeks is essential for us to be able to complimentary treat a complication, concern or asymmetry that occurs within our control. This timeframe is specific for dermal filler follow ups, so if you aren’t able to find an appointment with your nurse within this period please contact us as soon as possible.

Upon arriving to Angel Aesthetics, you will be greeted by our Angels and checked in via our booking system. If you have any patient forms left to complete (these are sent as part of your reminder message), please arrive at least 5 minutes early. If you are booked in for lip filler, you can be numbed early by request.

At your appointment time, your nurse will take you through and begin your consultation, which is provided as part of all treatments booked – we’ll never inject without knowing your goals. During this consultation, you will be numbed for lip filler if you haven’t requested early numbing, then you and your nurse will decide on the best treatment option/s for you, depending on your candidacy, goals and budget. Your nurse will advise you of your expected results, discuss with you product options (such as thick or regular filler) and volumes, and go through your aftercare instructions & any potential side effects to look out for, specific to your dermal filler treatment.

A prescription for your chosen treatment will be obtained via telehealth consultation if you are a new patient to us, or if it’s been more than 12 months since your last appointment with us. The doctor will also go through the risks again and obtain your consent to a prescription and subsequent administration.

Any makeup will be removed and the treatment area disinfected in preparation for treatment, sometimes patients are ‘marked up’ with a cosmetic pen (this is not always needed, and not for all areas). Once treatment has started, it’s all very quick and simple from there and in no time, treatment will be complete. After your treatment, your nurse will take you through to reception to complete payment, and you’ll be offered to sit and relax with a coffee, tea or sparkling water & some snacks to unwind and relax post treatment

The recommended timeframe to receive treatments before a special occasion or event varies per service. For Dermal Filler, we recommend receiving your treatment at minimum 4-6 weeks before your event, so your results have had time to fully settle, integrate into and lift the tissue.

Weddings: if you are a new patient to us, we ideally recommend coming in 6 months prior for a consultation – this allows us to create the best treatment plan for you with your treatment options and timeframes. This ensures you have your final results and avoid any stress of potential adjustments or complications too close to your special day.

All of our dermal fillers contain a numbing agent called lignocaine, which from the first injection begins working its magic to deliver a virtually pain free experience.

The only dermal filler treatment that truly benefits from the use of TLA (topical local anaesthetic) is the lips. This is due to the high concentration of nerve endings in our lips, making them very sensitive. We use a high grade numbing gel that works within 10-15 minutes, We recommend to arrive early for longer numbing.

Industry research has found that the body’s natural threshold for anaesthetic for natural redheads is higher, meaning you need a larger dose, or your TLA numbing needs to be on for a minimum of 15 minutes.

Dermal filler dissolving is a cosmetic procedure that involves the use of an enzyme (hyaluronidase) to break down and dissolve fillers that have been injected into the skin. The enzyme works by breaking down the hyaluronic acid molecules present in filler, which are then naturally absorbed by the body.

Dissolving can be performed on any area that has been treated with non-permanent dermal filler if you aren’t happy with the aesthetic results, or are experiencing a complication.

We recommend dissolving previous lip filler if you have any migration, want to change the shape of your lips, or have any visible lumps throughout the lip tissue.  Your nurse will advise whether a full dissolve is needed, or whether a spot dissolve treatment can suffice. If you aren’t sure whether dissolving is needed, please message us with photos before you book and we can assist. Dissolving filler in other areas is recommended in the event of a complication or poor placement.

The results of dissolving are usually noticeable within a few days, but you may need a repeat treatment at the two-week mark depending on the amount of filler initially present.

We can refill any dissolved area a minimum of two weeks later if all previous filler has been removed, so we recommend booking your refill appointment with your nurse at the time of dissolving. Your nurse may ask you to send progress photos to ensure all filler has been dissolved by the time of your next booking

It is important to note that not all types of dermal fillers can be dissolved with hyaluronidase, and patients should discuss their expectations and the potential risks with your nurse and doctor before undergoing any procedure.
